EU launches new air safety rules

European aeroplanes must be better tracked and made easier to find after a crash, the EU has said in releasing new rules that are meant to avoid incidents such as the disappearance a Malaysia Airlines flight in 2014.

“For the general public, it is not understandable that aircraft are not permanently tracked wherever they fly. The rules we adopted today aim to address this deficiency,” EU Transport Commissioner Violeta Bulc said in a statement on Wednesday.

“Safety of European citizens is an absolute priority,” she added.

The new rules apply to EU aviation operators using passenger planes of more than 27 tonnes and carrying more than 19 passengers, as well as cargo aircraft of more than 45.5 tonnes.

They will be required to use an aircraft tracking system; equip new aeroplanes with technology that will help to pinpoint where a flight ended after an accident; and technologically improve flight recorders, cockpit voice recorders and underwater location devices.

The technical details will now be fleshed out by the European Aviation Safety Authority.

Beijing-bound flight MH370, which was carrying 227 passengers and 12 crew, disappeared from air traffic radar on March 8, 2014, after taking off from Kuala Lumpur.

Analysis of satellite data revealed that the plane turned west, then south and continued to fly for six hours over the remote southern waters of the Indian Ocean before it vanished.

The only part of the plane that has been found was a wing flap that washed up on Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean in July.

An international search for the plane continues.
