Details of Hobart Airport upgrade revealed

Hobart Airport is in line for a $100 million makeover, including an extended runway and more terminal facilities, but passengers will still have to walk across the tarmac.

Details of the redevelopment were revealed on Wednesday with a new arrivals hall and dining area due to be complete by mid-2016 as part of a $25 million renovation of the passenger terminal.

A redeveloped and expanded departure lounge will follow.

The finished product aims to showcase Tasmania both through decor and the food and wine that will be available at outlets.

There are also plans for improved car parking facilities and access roads.

But there are no plans for aerobridges linking planes to the terminal, with passengers still having to walk across the tarmac before disembarking, or after arriving.

The federal government has contributed the majority of funds for the $40 million, 500-metre runway extension.

The longer runway will be constructed to enable direct flights to South East Asia and more flexible operations to Antarctica, the Tasmanian government said.

In total there will be more than $100 million invested over seven years in the airport upgrade.
