You would be living under a rock the size of Uluru to not know that Tourism Australia is an Instagram superstar, with 2.2 million followers. A new web-tool allows companies to track their daily progress on Instagram and see how they compare to their competitors.

KonichiranK measures the number of followers an account has, the daily and weekly growth, as well as historical performance making it possible to see when brand’s experienced rapid growth. Director Andrew Green said the free tool allows marketing managers to quickly gain insight on how they are performing.

“Not only does industry-leader Tourism Australia have millions of followers, they gained nearly 7,000 new followers in the past week.  The remaining top five are fairly close – there’s only 30,000 difference between Queensland coming in second with 272,000 and Sydney in fifth place with 241,000 followers,” Green said.

“The competition between Sydney and Melbourne is tight. Melbourne currently leads by six percent though the gap is closing – six months ago Melbourne had an 11 percent lead,” Green added.

Green said that many brands are still trying to get their head around how to use the channel to connect with communities. His tips for a successful Instagram account include:

  • High-resolution, crisp images with no filters consistently get good results
  • Images should be easy to understand without having to read the caption
  • Top brands post more often – Tourism Australia has published more than 6,000 posts to reach its two million followers
  • Make use of User-Generated Content (UGC) and regularly feature great photos by everyday people to enhance the online community
  • Repost photos manually – not using a repost app, they detract from the beauty of the original image
  • Every image has to be amazing – it’s so important for the quality of images to be consistent
  • Instagram is strong for growing awareness though top brands also track the click-thrus and leverage this such as directing traffic to newsletter signup, or even to make bookings

Konichirank currently has over 600 brands across 25 categories and marketers can sign up to the newsletter to receive updates on the category of their choice, with insights and news on the big movers. If a brand or category is missing, people can request it be added via the website www.konichirank.com.
