Chinese tourists in the naughty corner

China has said they are starting to track the action of its citizens overseas, after receiving a mountain of naughty reports.

According to China Daily, records will be kept by provincial and national tourism authorities for up to two years, starting from the day the misbehaviour of a traveller is confirmed.

If necessary, the tourist in question will be handed over to any number of authorities, such as customs, transportation and banking authorities, with the tourists then allowed to appeal.

As per the China National Tourism Administration website on Monday, such bad behaviour includes violating order on public transportation-including flights-damaging public facilities or historical relics, ignoring social customs at tourism destinations, and becoming involved with gambling or prostitution.

The new measures follow incidents involving Chinese tourists that sparked controversy recently, according to China Daily, where during a three-day Tomb Sweeping holiday, three tourists were arrested in Japan for alleged sexual harassment.

China Daily reports that under local law, one of the tourists allegedly used a mobile phone to take upskirt photos, and could now face either one year in prison, or a fine of 1 million yen, or AU$10,785.

On top of this incident, back in December, Chinese tourists were again under the spotlight when a flight from Bangkok to Nanjing was forced to turn back just 90 minutes into the journey when two Chinese passengers created a disturbance.

According to the Guardian, the Administration said in a separate post on Tuesday that “social supervision” of tourists was required because “tourism reflects on the country and the people’s image”.

It is hoped new stricter measures will deter future incidents such as these when Chinese travellers take to OS.
