Britain defies Fawlty Towers image

The country that gave the world Fawlty Towers is now home to 10 of the world’s top 25 accommodation finds, according to the TripAdvisor travel site.

The UK, which produced the hit television comedy starring John Cleese about an appalling seaside hotel, now has four bed & breakfast places in the top 10 and the world’s best budget hotel in the rating agency’s 13th annual Travellers Choice Awards.

“Every few seconds my iPad’s pinging with another booking, but you can’t complain about too much business,” says Sue Burrell, proprietor of the three-bedroom Millgate in Masham, North Yorkshire.

Millgate was named the best B&B in the world.

TripAdvisor relies on millions of customer reviews to rate thousands of properties around the world. It said Britain had more top-rated places to stay than any other country.

“We’re absolutely thrilled to bits,” said Caroline Robbins, whose family runs the Lawton Court Hotel in the Welsh seaside resort of Llandudno, named the world’s best budget hotel.

The 50-room Haymarket was named London’s best hotel.
