Cathay Pacific said farewell to its final Boeing 747-400 on Saturday, and a keen-eyed Travel Weekly contributor took this snap of the moment the aircraft swooped low down Victoria Harbour past the Marco Polo Hongkong hotel.

Boeing 747s first entered Cathay Pacific’s passenger fleet in 1979, and the fly-by gave the Hong Kong public a final opportunity to say goodbye.

Spots on the historic flight were secured by Cathay Pacific staff who made a minimum donation of HK$747, raising a total of around HK$200,000 for the Hong Kong Breast Cancer Foundation.

Cathay Pacific Chief Executive Ivan Chu said: “The Boeing 747 has served Cathay Pacific impeccably for nearly four decades, transforming it into a truly global airline. It was heart-warming to see our staff enjoying this special moment. I must also thank them all for raising funds for the Hong Kong Breast Cancer Foundation through their participation.”

Cathay Pacific’s 747 fleet carried more than 160 million passengers right around the globe for 37 years.

The aircraft completed its last passenger operation from Tokyo Haneda Airport to Hong Kong on 1 October.
