Aussie woman dies in Bali

There has been another tragic scooter accident in Bali, this time taking the life of 27-year-old Magnetic Island native Sophia Martini.

Martini was was on the back of a scooter driven by her boyfriend Steele Nugent when the accident took place.

According to reports, Martini was thrown off the back of the bike when it crashed into the side of the road in Kuta in the early hours of Monday morning.

Nugent is currently being detained by Indonesian authorities, however Martini’s mother has asked police not to charge him for the crash.

The news comes only a few months after 26-year-old Sydney woman Ella Knights was killed in a similar accident in April.

Two other Australians died in Bali late last year, with 16-year-old Lochie Connaughton and Victorian firefighter Adrian Newton both killed in motorbike accidents on the Indonesian island.

Martini is being remembered by Magnetic Island locals as bright, beautiful and a big part of the Queensland community.

A local gym, Maggie Island Bootcamp, wrote a tribute to Martini on its Facebook page.

“We will all miss Soph terribly, a shining light of fun and always smiling. She particularly liked the most challenging of work outs, pushing herself and encouraging others along with her with that determined gentle spirit,” the post said.

“We love you Soph and will never forget you. Rest in Peace.”

Despite the continual accidents, Indonesia was recently voted the most popular international destination for Australian tourists.
