Aussie man dies on Mount Everest descent

In sad news this morning, a Melbourne man has died while descending from Mount Everest’s base camp in Nepal.

Per Fairfax, he became ill last Thursday night at base camp, after trekking with three other Aussies. He began his descent of around 5.3km the next morning, but reportedly died on the way down.

According to Fairfax, the man, who was also a father of two, was not actually attempting to climb to the summit, but had been among the many thousands of tourists who trek to the Nepal base camp site each year.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) could only confirm to Fairfax that it was aware of the death of an Australian man in Nepal.

“We stand ready to offer consular assistance in accordance with the consular services charter,” DFAT said in a statement.

His family were reportedly informed of his death late on Friday. Per Fairfax, the man worked for a multinational tech company.
