Windowless planes aren't as nice as they sound

Windowless planes aren't as nice as they sound

A new proposal from the Centre for Process Innovation has suggested a strategy that could make planes lighter, use less fuel, and subsequently reduce the cost of airfares.

Pedestrian recently reported that this centre has been throwing around the notion of building such an aircraft, but as they warn, it won’t be good news for all of us.

Essentially, the planes would be made windowless, and while that sounds like a fairly reasonable notion, it won’t be once you learn what the windows would be replaced with.

The interior walls of the cabin would basically be turned into giant smart displays that project images of the outside surroundings via cameras mounted on the outside of the plane, effectively giving the impression that the cabin is transparent, according to Pedestrian.

The materials used to make the current cabin walls and windows put immense pressure on the overall aircraft weight due to the materials used to make them, which is why they would be replaced with organic light emitting diode (OLED) displays.

Pedestrian reports that the proposal posits it would make the planes considerably lighter and reduce running costs – a major breakthrough considering 80% of the total flight weight comes from fuel and plane materials.

But this somewhat unnerving future is a while away yet, Pedestrian notes, due to OLED’s being susceptible to moisture, requiring it to be encased in inflexible glass.

The organisation, however, is confident that these ideas should be of high priority in the conversations around aircraft manufacturing, meaning that one day in the future, these plane designs could indeed become a reality.

What do you think of these designs? Could you fly in one?
