Virgin Atlantic to build momentum

Virgin Atlantic to build momentum

Virgin Atlantic has said that while Australia is a “ready-made market” effort must be made to woo travellers to Britain in the aftermath of last year’s Olympics and Diamond Jubilee.

Virgin Atlantic Australia general manager Luke Fisher told Travel Today that the airline needs to try and build on that interest and momentum this year.

“It doesn’t matter if times are good or bad, there are always a million Australians who must go to the UK,” Fisher said.

Last year’s marketing efforts concentrated on London, while this year the airline will focus on Britain with new domestic services to Manchester, Aberdeen and Edinburgh.

This has been welcome news for the airline’s partner Visit Britain.

“They want to see dispersal of Australians, not just into London but right through the British Isles,” Fisher said.

“We are lucky that we have a ready-made market, there is always a ground swell,” he added.

Fisher told Travel Today that while the airline had leverage at Heathrow Airport they were constrained by Sydney Airport where they have just one flight.

Despite this, the draft plan for Sydney Airport’s redevelopment has potential for Virgin Atlantic.

“One of the options is that Qantas takes part of the terminal space and Virgin the other,” he said.

“That’s got a long way to go… but from a conceptual point of view it’s wonderful.”
