Vail Resorts in Colorado is investing $85 million in upgrades for the 2014-15 northern ski season.

The investment includes a new express lift at Beaver Creek, which will feature a gondola cabin for every five chairs and result in a 35 per cent increase in uphill capacity.

Beaver Creek will also get 34 new fully-automated snowmaking guns on Gold Dust and Lower Larkspur trails.

At Breckenridge, the Colorado Super Chair will be upgraded from a quad express to a six-passenger express, increasing capacity by 30 per cent.

The resort's Peak 9 restaurant will also undergo an interior remodel, which will include a new kitchen

One of Vail's luxury hotels, The Lodge, will get a facelift. There'll be significant renovations to 56 hotel rooms and the lobby, with work starting in August and scheduled to finish in time for Christmas.

Canyons ski resort in Utah will also receive some of the love, with temporary on-mountain eatery Cloud Dine becoming a permanent, 316-seat restaurant.

The resort's pump station will also be upgraded, meaning snowmaking will become 25 per cent more efficient.

The upgrades are part of Vail Resorts' five-year resort investment, which will total $492 million.

Vail Resorts comprises 10 ski resorts.
