Travellers trust agents’ safety advice

Australian travellers are putting their trust in safety advice supplied by travel agents, according to a SureSave.

The travel insurance company conducted research involving more than 1,000 Australian-based travellers, which revealed a year-on-year increase in the number of Australians who trust travel agent's safety advice in 2014.

According to the results, 81% of travellers who purchase their holiday from a travel agent in the past 12 months viewed their consultant as a “trusted source of travel and safety advice.”

Of the respondents, 30% said they purchased insurance after the consulted a travel agent, 20% said they went with the same insurance provider they had used for a previous trip and 16% searched online.

SureSave national sales director Talbot Henry said this shows the reliable travel safety advice from travel agents, something that travellers are actively seeking out.

Henry said the survey also highlights increasing value of an experienced travel agent and their advice around travel insurance, especially as given that two-thirds (66%) of travellers admit to not fully reading their Product Disclosure Statement (PDS), and 58 % of respondents "skimmed over" the PDS.

Emphasising the importance of the PDS which lays out all the terms of an insurance policy, Henry mentioned “travellers legally have to read the document prior to purchasing a policy, so it is critical everyone not only takes out travel insurance before they travel but reads their PDS first.”

Henry further stresses the importance of this for travellers with 'free' policies provided by credit card companies, which can include additional conditions and restrictions.
