Tourism unshaken by latest budget

Tourism unshaken by latest budget
By admin

Last night's federal budget has delivered a steady outcome for tourism with the country's peak body roughly maintaining its level of funding.
Tourism Australia will receive $130 million to continue its role of marketing the destination to the world, broadly in line with expectations.
The funding forms part of the Gillard government's Tourism 2020 plan, which aims to double the amount of overnight expenditure over the next seven years.
"By making Australia the destination of choice for holiday makers we can boost our economy, support jobs and attract investment," minister for tourism Gary Gray said.
This year will also see a rise in the marketing expenditure granted via the Asia Marketing Fund (AMF), which is linked to revenues collected via the Passenger Movement Charge (PMC). For the financial year 2012/2013 the PMC delivered $8.5 million for the AMF, but in the next financial year this is estimated to rise to $12.5 million. In an expected boon for tourism, the total funding available via the AMF is expected to reach $54 million by 2016/2017 according to budget estimates.
But despite the apparent windfall, the PMC's total collection forecast to 2016/2017 is expected to reap $1.1 billion for the government, of which only around 10% will filter down to the tourism industry.
