Tourism to get boost from new precinct strategy

The development of “strategic centres” in 28 suburbs across Sydney will chart a new course for tourism opportunities, according to the Tourism & Transport Forum.

The NSW government unveiled its Metropolitan Strategy which includes the new precincts between Olympic Park to Parramatta in Sydney’s west, which according to the TTF if “delivered well, can make Sydney an even more attractive place for international visitors”.

“Tourists want to visit vibrant and busy precincts where they can experience the best of Sydney and its people,” TTF chief executive Margy Osmond said.

“The government’s new growth area centred on the Olympic Park to Parramatta corridor can help cement Olympic Park as a major sporting and entertainment precinct.

“Providing residential and commercial opportunities will deliver a stronger foundation for the future of world-class facilities like ANZ Stadium and venues like the Royal Agricultural Showground – we might finally get the full benefits of the Olympic legacy.

“The Bays Precinct also offers an exciting opportunity to create a world-renowned destination with over five kilometres of new harbourside activities.

“The final Metropolitan Strategy now recognises that a new airport at Badgerys Creek will give western Sydney a major economic anchor while ensuring that aviation access for tourism is improved.”

“The government now needs to update the NSW Transport Master Plan so that its 20 year infrastructure plan matches the government’s planning objectives,” Osmond said.

“New growth areas identified since the completion of the Transport Master Plan, like the Bays Precinct, Badgerys Creek and the Parramatta to Olympic Park corridor, need to be underpinned by good public transport.

“Badgerys Creek will need a rail link alongside a better road network, while direct and better public transport is essential to the future of Olympic Park and the Bays Precinct.”
