As #SoMeT14AU concluded in The Barossa yesterday, Rodney Payne from Think! Social Media was pleased to announce the success of the event had led to the hashtag trending in first place nationally on Twitter.

This is not surprising as over 150 travel and tourism members and social media experts spent two days at Chateau Tununda in The Barossa using what they were learning to Tweet, Facebook, Instagram and more.

Day two brought more valuable insights into how to use social media to “get the message out there” and boost business and awareness for those in the travel and tourism industry.

Donna Mortiz from Socially Sorted delved into how to create content, share your story and engage with more customers in real-time by “getting social with mobile.”

Considering that by 2015, mobile web will be bigger than desktop, Mortiz pointed out the changing times of social sharing and doing it right. From the early days of “Egyptian Facebook” where hieroglyphics shared a story visually, to today’s era of online media that requires the sense of touch added to visual content, Mortiz urges companies to ensure they are up to speed with mobile friendly content.

Fact is, if your website is not responsive to mobile, then you are missing out on customer’s interaction, according to Mortiz. “Everyone who has a smartphone in their pocket is a content creator and marketer for you, so include them in your social media plans,” Mortiz added.

Additionally, Kaylah Buckman from Tourism and Events Queensland said to “surprise and delight” when engaging with customers on social media. Tourism and Events Queensland is famous for this, often surprising Twitter fans with small but meaningful surprise gifts in response to posts, something Buckman said is simple but spreads “word of mouth” advertising like wildfire.

The #SoMeT14AU conference ended with an awards ceremony, which saw Sophie Bon from BIG4 Bellarine Holiday Park take out the top gong for her engaging yet entertaining presentation on her “focused, digital holiday park.”
