German and Austrian beachgoers are most likely to be found nude at the beach according to the results of the 2014 Expedia Flip Flop Report, conducted by travel site giant Expedia.com.

The study examines the most common joys and anxieties among beachgoers worldwide, including comfort with public nudity, opinions of speed-style swimwear and even fear of sharks amongst beachgoers in North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

For the third consecutive year, Germans were the likeliest to sunbathe fully nude at the beach, however this year they tied with Austria, with 28% of beachgoers from both countries reporting to have spent a day at the beach in the nude.

Worldwide, beach nudity is more common among men than women coming in at 18% and 6% respectively.

Toplessness has proved to be popular in Europe with 49% of Austrians, 42% of Spaniards and 39% of Germans having spent time out on the sand sans top.

While sharks may be a rare sighting half the respondents reported that they are afraid to swim at the beach due to sharks, although 35% of that group will swim anyway.

The beach itself is the most popular travel destination for the world’s travellers, with 56% of the study’s respondents taking a beach vacation in the past year and 75% of people indicating they are likely to take a beach vacation in the next 12 months.

“The beach is the world’s most popular travel destination by a considerable margin” said John Morrey, vice president and general manager of Expedia.

Beach lovers are even willing to sacrifice for more time on the sand with 29% of people saying they would work weekends for a month in exchange for just one extra beach vacation per year, 25% would give up a week’s salary and 11% would be willing to experience influenza for a full 48 hours.

“Every year we ask travellers all over the world to tell us their likes and dislikes as they relate to beach behaviour. In response, we can offer travellers the recommendations that best suit their preferences. Expedia will help you get to the perfect beach, but when it comes to behaviour on the sand, you’re on your own” said Morrey.
