Sydney Festival is back in 2015, with the release of its program bringing new excitement in the lead up to the cultural celebration.

With over 18 world premieres, 11 Australian premieres and 22 Australian exclusive events, the event is gearing up to impress both international and local visitors this summer with a range of free and ticketed attractions.

Kicking off on January 8 and continuing until January 26, Sydney Festival will be taking its festivities to venues across Sydney, Parramatta and beyond, spanning musical, theatrical, artistic and dance spheres.

Destination NSW CEO Sandra Chipchase said hosting the Sydney Festival over summer makes it a perfect time to visit the city.

“From free concerts in The Domain to circus and cabaret shows in Hyde Park, Sydney Festival really transforms the city in January,” she said.

Sydney Festival director Lieven Bertels said the unique line up of attractions will ensure its audiences will be left enthralled.

“What’s really special about Sydney Festival is the diverse programming, with the best local and international artists from high arts – opera, theatre, and contemporary dance, to circus and family shows, and a whole range of free activities,” Bertels said.

“Living up to its tag line ‘This is Our City in Summer’, Sydney Festival gives audiences the perfect excuse to celebrate the city in summer.”

Program highlights include James Thierr√©e’s exclusive circus performance, Seu Jorge’s Brazilian, samba and reggae tunes, Kate Mulvany’s Australian theatre work and Far from Folsom’s recreation of Johnny Cash’s 1968 Folsolm Prison concerts at the historic Parramatta Gaol.

Other highlights include the Parramatta opening party with a free musical street celebration around Centenary Square, and the return of the Festival Village, which will host The Famous Spiegeltent and new addition The Aurora Spiegeltent.

Sydney Festival 2015 includes 179 events, 85 of which are free, with 495 performers and 974 artists from across 30 countries descending onto 25 indoor and outdoor venues.
