Smarter suitcase could end lost bags era

Sticker tags on suitcases may soon be a thing of the past, now that Rimowa, Airbus and T-Systems have combined to introduce a new smart suitcase technology by the name of Bag2go.

Suitcases with the electronics inside can be tracked with a smartphone app that was demonstrated at the ITB travel trade show in Berlin. The bar code which is necessary in identifying the suitcase at airports is shown in the app.

The app allows travellers to know where their suitcase is at all times, which could lead to a reduction in the number of lost bags.

At the moment, there are only prototypes of the suitcase. But bags containing the product could hit the market by the end of the year.

The price of a smart suitcase will be about 20 per cent higher than for a regular suitcase.
