Sherlock Holmes exhibit to open in London
By admin

The biggest exhibition about Sherlock Holmes in Britain in more than 60 years will offer revelations about the fictional detective's origins and Scottish author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's inspiration for the character.

One of the jewels of the show, which will be staged at the Museum of London, is a painting of Doyle done by Sidney Paget in 1897 that allows fans to "see what the author looked like at the age of 37" and bears "a curious likeness" to Holmes's assistant, Dr Watson, curator Pat Hardy said.

Reporters got a preview of the exhibition, which opens in October, on Tuesday.

Paget illustrated the early Sherlock Holmes stories published in The Strand, creating the popular image we have of the detective with his cape, hat and pipe, Museum of London director of historical collections Alex Werner said.

Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was inspired to create the "most famous detective who ever lived and who will never die" by American writer Edgar Allan Poe's The Murders In The Rue Morgue (1841), Werner said.

Poe's work is considered the first detective story published and the manuscript will be displayed in the exhibition, Werner said.

The show includes items from the Museum of London's collection and other institutions, giving fans of the detective who lived at 221B Baker Street in London an opportunity to learn more about their hero.

The Museum of London's Sherlock Holmes exhibition will be the most complete since 1951, when the Festival of Britain was held to show Britons their national treasures.
