The South Australian Parliament has become the latest jurisdiction to repeal the Travel Agents Act, with the Australian Federation of Travel Agents branding the move a “key milestone” in the reform of the travel industry.

It follows similar moves by New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland and the ACT.

The wave of legislative reforms is the result of five of years of closely work with the state, territory and federal governments, according to AFTA chief executive Jayson Westbury.

He described the repeal as “critical” for the sector, as AFTA prepares to introduce its ATAS accreditation scheme on July 1.

“ATAS brings a new industry-led standard to travel agents and provides a compelling value proposition for both travel agents and consumers in a deregulated environment,” he said.

“It is critical that we have a consistent national approach and the support of the South Australian Parliament takes us one step closer to this outcome.”
