Rocky Mountaineer hints at global expansion

Rocky Mountaineer has hinted at further expansion beyond Canadian borders, calling its coastal passage route to Seattle its “first showcase”.

“We see that as the beginning of a really intriguing and exciting American relationship going forward,” Rocky Mountaineer global sales vice president Bob Nicholas said.

While not confirming specific plans, Nicholas said that the Rocky Mountaineer brand is transferable to other parts of the world and to stay tuned.

“We want to demonstrate that we can deliver our Canadian experience on American soil,”  Nicholas told Travel Today.

Meanwhile, Nicholas reported that trade generates more than 80% of its business as it reiterated the significance of Australian agents.

“The trade is critical to us, and all classes of trade. Those relationships are essential to who we are and to who we want to be,” Nicholas said.

Rocky Mountaineer celebrates 25 years of operation this year and hosted Channel Ten’s The Living Room hosts Miguel Maestre and Dr Chris Brown on a four-part segment to air throughout August.

The rail company’s marketing strategy targets consumers to grow brand awareness that leads back to the trade.

“It’s our job to educate their clientele on the option of travelling with Rocky Mountaineer,” Nicholas said.

"As we’ve increased the awareness we’ve seen the business increase with every class of trade, so it’s not a zero sum game,” Nicholas added.
