Revealed: The new LAX

Revealed: The new LAX
By admin

LAX’s new Tom Bradley terminal, which has cost $US1.9 billion and won’t be completed until 2015, is taking serious shape.

SHOPPING:

It’s comprehensive enough at the new terminal for me to regret not saving my shopping for the airport. For quirky gifts there’s Kitson and for make-up there’s Mac. L’Occitane, Michael Kors, Benefit and Smashbox are all here too – and minus the tax to be found beyond the airport borders. In all, the new terminal has tripled its retail floor space.

TECHNOLOGY:

There’s free wi-fi throughout the terminal, with quick connection and a fast speed; perfect for sending last minute emails before the long flight to Australia. There’s no catch either, unlike JFK airport which offers only 30 minutes of wi-fi on the condition that you download an Amazon app. The wi-fi works on my smartphone but struggles to connect on my laptop.

FOOD:

Iconic foodie destinations in the US have set up shop at the new terminal. These include the trendy Ink Sack sandwich shop and Umami Burger. Then there’s Starbucks Evenings – a novel splash for Starbucks that is fashioned after a wine bar. It sells beer, wine and snacks such as dates wrapped in bacon. There’s also an on-trend cupcake stall in pastel colours conveniently situated right next to the Qantas gate.

GATES:

Row chairs are wide and curved for comfort, while stand-alone capsule seats add designer flair. There are power points located under every third seat, which is very convenient. Alas, they are not working on the evening I visit, which means passengers are alternating to share one wall port that works.

X-FACTOR:

It doesn’t get much more LA than a Bon Voyage wall that projects images of people in slow-motion leaping into the air. There’s also a Time Tower that stands more than 21 metres and is lit up with neon lighting and functions as a lift.
