Overseas visitors drive airport traffic growth

Australia's largest airports have experienced strong growth in international passenger numbers, but domestic travel has been more subdued.

Sydney Airport had a 5.6% lift in international travellers in May, and a 2.1% increase in domestic passengers, compared to the same month a year ago.

Melbourne Airport's international traffic rose by 11% in May, while Brisbane Airport recorded a seven per cent jump.

Sydney Airport chief executive Kerrie Mather said travellers from China drove Sydney's rise in international traffic, up 11.4% from a year ago.

Melbourne Airport chief executive Chris Woodruff said Jetstar's Melbourne to Japan service helped to drive strong growth from the Japanese market.

Domestic traffic rose by 3.1% in Melbourne, and fell 1.7% in Brisbane.

The subdued domestic numbers come as retailers, including travel agency Flight Centre, report sale declines following the tough federal budget handed down on May 13.
