The Australian Federation of Travel Agents has welcomed the launch of a new government campaign which urges tourists to get insurance and to register with smartraveller.gov.au before they travel.

New adverts tell the story of Natalie Hensby who was injured in a high speed boat crash in Thailand. Registering with Smartraveller and taking out comprehensive travel insurance saved her life and $100,000 in medical costs, AFTA chief executive Jayson Westbury said.

"AFTA and our members are very proud supporters of this important campaign and we congratulate the Federal Government on their ongoing commitment to ensuring Australians travelling overseas are aware, insured and contactable in the event of the unexpected happening."

Qantas saw its market share of international passengers fall to 16.9% in September, down from 17.5% the previous year. Jetstar also slipped, from 8.3% to 7.4%.
