The first domestic services to be flown by Jetstar’s new Boeing 787 Dreamliner have been confirmed as Melbourne to the Gold Coast and Cairns, as the low cost carrier took delivery of the long-awaited aircraft in Seattle.

Qantas Group chief executive Alan Joyce and Jetstar Group chief executive Jayne Hrdlicka were both present for the official handover ceremony at Boeing’s Everett plant.

It is the first of 14 Dreamliners on order for Jetstar’s international fleet. The newcomer’s arrival has been heralded as a “step change” both in efficiency and customer experience with the 787 capable of burning 20% less fuel.

“Today is a historic milestone for the Qantas Group and Jetstar as we welcome the most advanced passenger aircraft ever constructed to the fleet,” Joyce said.

“In just ten short years, Jetstar has grown to be the largest low fares group of carriers in the Asia Pacific, carrying more than 100 million passengers. The 787 will set up Jetstar for another decade of growth."

Each of the Jetstar 787s will carry 335 customers, with a 21 passenger business class cabin and 314 in economy. The 787 will feature inflight entertainment in every seat, larger windows, better cabin atmosphere to reduce jetlag and technology to minimise turbulence.

Sales will open soon for the first domestic 787 flights which will commence on Wednesday November 13. The aircraft is currently en route to Melbourne where it will arrive tomorrow.
