Jetstar: 787 a destination in itself

Jetstar is confident its new Boeing 787 will see strong bookings as the carrier identified the launch routes for the Dreamliner.

Chief executive David Hall told Travel Today that, subject to production schedules and approval from the safety regulator, Jetstar is on track to have "two if not three" 787s by the end of the year. The first will be delivered in September.

"It's been a long time in the making," Hall said.

"We'll operate proving flights around our Australian network and then we will replace our international A330s with them.

"The final launch destinations not sorted yet but they will be destinations we currently operate probably into Japan, Denpasar, Phuket, Bangkok, Honolulu and you’ll probably see it on Auckland and Singapore."

Hall promised the new aircraft will offer a "great customer experience" with bigger windows, innovative lighting, lower noise levels and less turbulence in addition to its fuel efficiency benefits.

"I think people will see it as a destination in itself," he said. "People are going to want to book to fly on it I’m sure."

Extensive advertising around the Dreamliner will follow in the coming months, he added.

Meanwhile, Hall confirmed that no further expansion of its Australian network is on the cards at present, although the carrier continues to look at opportunities and is working closely with tourism bodies.

However, the size of its fleet gives it the ability to make such decisions relatively swiftly, he said.

"We have a strong order book of new aircraft coming and with our scale in terms of size of fleet, we can quickly and decisively move capacity around to meet demand," Hall said.

Its focus for now is on strengthening its new Sydney-Ayers Rock route with additional frequencies a possibility if there is demand.
