Intrepid Travel has taken full ownership of day tour company Urban Adventures after acquiring the 50% owned by WHL Group.

The operation was established as joint venture between Intrepid and WHL in 2009, with both companies taking an even share.

Intrepid managing director James Thornton said the deal will allow Urban Adventures to become fully integrated into the wider Intrepid business.

“The original idea behind Urban Adventures was to give travellers a taste of what an Intrepid Travel trip feels like” he said. “We’ve seen a huge appetite from customers for the unique local experiences on offer, and this deal allows us to fully integrate Urban Adventures with our portfolio of small group adventure travel brands”.

The acquisition price was not disclosed.

Urban Adventures is on course to carry 70,000 passengers on 265 trips in 90 cities this year.

It will continue to be led by general manager Tony Carne.

The deal is subject to legal completion and will free up capital for the WHL Group to focus on its other businesses such as Hotel Link Solutions and Green Path Transfers.

WHL is a global network of companies designed to promote local experiences to consumers.
