Australian hotel operator 8Hotels has taken its number of Sydney properties to eight with the opening of a 90-room hotel close to Darling Harbour.

The 1888 Hotel – named after the year the property was built – has undergone a $30 million development over the past two years.

8hotels chief executive Paul Fischmann described it as the “most beautiful and unique of our 21 properties”.

“It is the culmination of a long and extensive collaboration to develop an exceptional boutique hotel in a wonderful location,” he said.

The hotel has a photography focus as 1888 was also the year that Kodak launched. It features a revolving series of Instagram images taken by guests with the company offering a free night to any Instagram user with more than 10,000 followers.

In addition, the hotel will run a monthly competition with the guest who has snapped the best Instagram picture earning themselves a free night.
