West Australian MP Gary Gray will take on the role of tourism minister vacated by Martin Ferguson last week, as industry called for a strong public policy focus on tourism between now and the federal election.

The Accommodation Association of Australia's chief executive, Richard Munro, welcomed today's news of Gray's appointment and that of Don Farrell as minister assisting on tourism, on the grounds of their political experience.

"Mr Gray and Senator Farrell are two experienced politicians which is critical as the Federal Government embarks on the process of developing tourism policies it will take to the election," he said.

Munro was buoyed by the prime minister's reinstatement of the assisting role, insisting it recognises the size of the industry which he highlighted as "one of the largest and most important in Australia".

"We look forward to seeing how the government proposes to advance the interests of our industry between now and September," he said.

Meanwhile, the AAA also took the opportunity to pay tribute to Martin Ferguson branding him an "outstanding" minister for tourism, particularly applauding his "arm's length" approach to the management of Tourism Australia.
