Commencing 8 June 2015, Etihad Airways will launch a daily non-stop service from Edinburgh, Scotland to its hub in Abu Dhabi. The new route will be serviced by the two-class Airbus A330-200 aircraft, offering a total of 22 seats in Business Class and 240 seats in Economy Class.

From Abu Dhabi, travellers will be able to conveniently connect through to a number of Etihad destinations across the Gulf region, Asia, Australia and Africa.

Edinburgh becomes the third departure point from the UK for Etihad Airways, and the first Scottish destination. The daily Edinburgh flights adds to the triple-daily flights from London, and double-daily flights from Manchester.

Etihad Airways president and chief executive officer, James Hogan, said Scotland had been on the airline’s radar for some time, with the two cities sharing strong tourism links.

“Travellers will also benefit from convenient connections to many other destinations, both on our own global network and through our relationships with other airlines.”

For the Australian market, the direct flights should boost the links with the UK market, as Edinburgh ranks as the second most visited city in the UK for Australians.

VisitScotland chairman Mike Cantlay said “VisitScotland’s strategy is to develop Scotland’s air connectivity by working with global airlines, and this exciting new direct route between the capitals of the UAE and Scotland continues to open up our wonderful tourism product to the Middle East, alongside Asia, Australia and Africa.”

Additionally, the new service will offer a 168-tonne cargo capacity per week in both directions, supporting Edinburgh’s position as the fourth largest finance centre in Europe and a global hub for the scientific research, food and drink, oil and gas, and chemical industries.
