Delta apologises for giraffe gaffe
By admin

America's Delta Airlines is in damage control after sending out an embarrassing World Cup tweet about a match between the US and Ghana.

In an attempt to celebrate the US victory, the airline tweeted a congratulations message using a picture of the Statue of Liberty to represent America, and an image of a giraffe for Ghana.

But, as Twitter users were quick to point out, giraffes aren't native to the African country.

"And it's @Delta's social media team with today's awful brand World Cup tweet," wrote Alex Horton.

Another joked the airline probably just stamps tickets to Nigeria, Kenya or the Ivory Coast with, "Africa, whatever".

Meanwhile, public relations student Sarah McIntosh chimed in: "Perfect example of a PR fail! Fitting after our #crisismanagement class."

"Betcha @Delta is flying, like, a pile of giraffes to Ghana right now," American sports writer Bruce Arthur quipped.

Delta Airlines promised to learn from the social media gaffe and admitted the image choice was "inaccurate and inappropriate".

"We're sorry for our choice of photo in our previous tweet," the airline tweeted.

"Best of luck to all teams."

Future images and posts would be scrutinised more carefully to ensure they reflect the company's "global focus", they promised.
