Cruise famil targets UK and US firms

Australia will make a play for a greater slice of the international cruise market as tourism officials pitch local product to UK and US cruise lines.

The VIP Cruise famil, a joint initiative between Tourism Australia, Cruise Down Under and Qantas, will showcase Australia’s ports, shore excursions and pre and post touring to a delegation of overseas executives.

Officials from Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, Fred Olsen, Holland America, Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania/Prestige and Silversea are so far confirmed to attend the famil between September 23 to 30.

Tourism Australia managing director Andrew McEvoy revealed the famil was part of a “concerted effort” to boost Australian inbound tourism through cruise.

“Cruising is one of the fastest growing sectors for Australian tourism, outpacing many of our international competitor destinations,” he said. “The biggest consumers of cruising holidays are Americans and Europeans, so to get the chance to make our pitch to such a top level delegation representing eight of the biggest cruise operators in the US and UK is a real coup and an opportunity we intend to make the very best of.”

Meanwhile, Cruise Down Under chairwoman Chris White claimed the “time is right” to show off Australia’s cruise assets.

“The cruise market has been experiencing strong year on year growth for more than a decade, with the 2012/13 season alone expecting 11 new ships in Australia,” she said.
