China Southern teams with Melbourne's Demons

Paper planes soared past the entrance to the Melbourne Cricket Ground as a paper aeroplane competition was held to celebrate the partnership between China Southern Airlines with Melbourne Football Club, the Demons.

Almost 2000 fans folded and flew their own planes for the prize of a return flight for two from Melbourne to Los Angeles over China Southern’s main hub of Guangzhou in Southern China.

The winner, who landed his paper plane closest to the target, was the nine-year old son of a family of avid Demons fans from Mansfield in country Victoria.

The sponsorship came about after the demons after the Demons travelled to China for an exhibition Aussie Rules match at the Shanghai World Expo in 2010, and then hosted the Chinese National AFL team, the China Red Demons.

“Ladies and gentlemen, the battle horn has sounded … let’s fly together, fight together, win together – my heart beats true for the red and the blue,” said China Southern company secretary M Xie in true Aussie Rules style to 600 VIPS and club members at a pre-match luncheon.

The airline has also been announced the third largest airline in the world for passengers carried, according to ratings released by the International Air Transport Association.

Taking first and second place are the giant American carriers Delta and Southwest Airlines, with 120.6 million and 115.3 million passengers respectively. China Southern boasts 91.5 million passengers and has a fleet of 558 aircraft, which is the largest in Asia and the fifth largest in the world.
