Branson talks up new UK venture

Virgin Atlantic has launched Little Red, a new UK domestic flight service which it claims will take on British Airways' "monopoly" on routes from London Heathrow.

The new carrier will operate 26 daily flights from LHR to Manchester from March 31, Edinburgh from April 5 and Aberdeen from April 9, with passengers able to connect to Virgin's worldwide network.

Sir Richard Branson said that the new offering would see Virgin Atlantic take on BA on "home turf", 29 years after it emerged as a contender in the long haul flying space from the UK.

"Little Red represents the next step on that journey as we go head to head with British Airways to provide domestic flights that deliver Virgin Atlantic's rock and roll spirit as well as real value for money," he said.

"The European Commission recognised that a British Airways monopoly would be undeniably bad for consumers and Little Red will stop British Airways dominating routes and driving higher prices."

The new airline will utilise Heathrow slots made available after British Airway's parent company IAG took over bmi.
