Deep-fried tarantulas, chocolate dipped bugs and dried caterpillars are just a few of the local delicacies Aussie travellers have tasted while on holiday, but snails tops the list of weird and wonderful foreign foods sampled, according to a recent survey by Australia’s favourite online destination, Wotif.com.

Wotif.com spokesperson, Kirsty La Bruniy said that 53% of respondents revealed they had tried an unusual local delicacy on holiday.

According to La Bruniy, Aussies appear to try anything and everything including fermented shark, monkey brains, stink bugs, guinea pigs and even famous one-thousand year old eggs.

However it’s the French delicacy of escargot that was the most sampled local delicacy tasted by Aussies.

It appears no animal is untouchable with travellers opting to eat reptiles and amphibians including frog legs, crocodile and even snake.

“Bear Grylls would be impressed with the number of creepy crawlies Australians are prepared to eat with crickets, witchetty grubs, bugs and grasshoppers all making it in the top ten list.” La Bruniy said.

""

Paris, Thailand and China were the top destinations for trying local delicacies.

36% of the respondents wouldn’t try anything crazy due to concerns of food poisoning.

56% said they didn’t only try the delicacy, but they actually enjoyed it.

However, La Bruniy said that some exotic foods seem to be a step too far for Australians.

“Almost 60% of respondents drew the line at one-thousand year old eggs and 55% of respondents wouldn’t give the potentially deadly, puffer fish a go.

""

Wotif’s top ten weirdest local delicacies:

  1. Snails
  2. Frog legs
  3. Crocodile
  4. Snake
  5. Haggis
  6. Crickets
  7. Chicken feet
  8. Witchetty grubs
  9. Bugs
  10. Grasshoppers

So with that being said, What is the strangest thing you have eaten while travelling?
