Bad tweet, record loss, court case looming: Malaysia Airlines' woes continue
By admin

Malaysia Airlines has apologised for an insensitive promotional marketing tweet asking travellers “Want to go somewhere, but don’t know where?” on the back of reporting a 53% jump in net losses for Q3 to A$184 million.

The airline and the Malaysian government are also facing a looming deadline of December 15 to reply to a negligence court case for MH370, filed by sons of businessman Jee Jing Hang, one of the 239 people on board the missing plane.

The case was filed in October, according to AAP, and is the first suit against the airline and government in relation to MH370, which disappeared on March 8.

The plaintiffs allege the airline was negligent and failed to take “all due safety measures” and that the Malaysian government did not attempt to establish contact within “reasonable time” after the flight disappeared from air control radar. They also point the finger at the immigration department, which allowed passengers to board with fake identification, the AAP reports.

The airline is planning a privatisation and US$1.8 billion overhaul later this month by majority shareholder, state investment arm, Khazanah Nasional and said it will “continue to focus on building revenue through aggressive marketing and promotions, and better capacity management,” as reported by The Age.

The tweet “Want to go somewhere, but don’t know where?” was removed a day after posting last week, with the airline claiming it was meant to inspire travellers but “unintentionally caused offence to some”, the paper reports.
