Tourism Australia has welcomed Air India’s direct flights from Australia to Delhi as a step toward its target of 300,000 Indian tourists by 2020.

Air India returns to Australia after a 16-year hiatus with the inaugural flight arriving in Sydney and Melbourne this morning.

“I have little doubt that Air India’s re-entry into the Australian market will be widely and warmly applauded,” Tourism Australia managing director Andrew McEvoy said.

McEvoy praised the work of Destination New South Wales, Tourism Victoria, Sydney and Melbourne airport in securing the airline’s return.

India is one of Australia’s fastest growing inbound markets and arrivals have increased by eight per cent this year.

The Indian tourism market is estimated to generate $2.3 billion by 2020.
