Accor to more than triple Indigenous workforce by 2016

Hotel firm Accor plans to more than triple its Indigenous workforce to 1000 employees by 2016, chief operating officer Pacific Simon McGrath has confirmed.

Speaking at the annual World of Accor event, McGrath highlighted tourism as an important employment solution for government, with the company working hard to capitalise on its potential.

“One key area we’re very proud of is our engagement in Indigenous affairs,” he said.

“We’re the largest employer in tourism of Indigenous employees.”

The company launched an Indigenous employment program in 2001 and now has around 300 Indigenous employees across its network.

“We’ve recently been in discussions with the current government about ramping that up,” McGrath revealed, with a funding program to “fuel” the investment under discussion.

While the project initially started off as a “social venture” for the hotelier, it has since developed into a “much better outcome”, he explained.

“When you look at the worldwide spectrum of destination marketing, if we’re going to sell the best of Australia – the landscapes, the beautiful blue skies and the culture – the best way to sell it on the world stage is to use an Australian Indigenous voice,” he said.

“Naturally, for that to become louder, we need to have more Indigenous employees in tourism.

“That’s our interest in it, we’re deeply invested in it and we’ll remain deeply invested in it.”
