148 feared dead in Germanwings plane crash

A passenger plane has crashed in the French Alps with all on board feared dead.

The Airbus 320 operated by Lufthansa’s budget airline, Germanwings has crashed in southern France en route from Barcelona to Dusseldorf.

Flight 4U9525 was believed to be carrying 142 passengers, two pilots and four cabin crew.

Debris has been found near a French ski resort in the Southern Alps but the cause of the crash is as yet unknown.

Currently Germanwings said it is unable to verify reports of the crash, despite the many media claims. Meanwhile Airbus has taken to twitter to report that a plane of theirs has been involved in a crash.

A distress call was made about 15 minutes prior to the aircraft’s disappearance. Weather conditions at the time were fine in the Alps, although the plane suffered severe turbulence over the Mediterranean sea prior to reaching France. Aviation experts are pointing to a technical fault.

The majority of the passengers are believed to be German, as yet it has not been confirmed if any Australians were on board during the Germanwings plane crash.

According the online database airfleets.net the Airbus A320 in question was 24 years old and had been with Germanwings’ parent company, Lufthansa since 1991.
