Plea for funding over staff crisis

An industry body dedicated to attracting more people into the industry will send letters to all members of the travel industry appealing for financial assistance to help tackle the staffing crisis.

The Travel Industry Careers Project Group, which includes senior industry figures and is headed by inPlace Recruitment managing director Sandra Chiles, is aiming to build up a “fighting fund” to address the issue.

Chiles told a meeting of the Council of Australian Tour Operators that strategies are in place to promote and raise awareness of the industry. Now it needs funding, she said.

“At the moment the industry is not getting out there and promoting itself and encouraging young people in,”Chiles told wholesalers.

“This is not about training it’s about encouraging people into the industry and retaining them. We are not the only industry suffering from staff shortages but you see other industries out there advertising and promoting themselves and we need to do that as well.”

Chiles said letters will be sent in a fortnight pleading with industry members to donate money.
