Australia has been gripped by World Cup fever, and if you’re one of the 3.5 million Aussies who are tuning in to watch the soccer, there’s a high chance you’ll want to travel to the great soccer nations in the next two years.

According to new research from Roy Morgan Research, people who watch soccer on TV or play it themselves are far more likely to travel to countries and regions famed for their soccer talents.

Latin America is practically a breeding ground for exceptional soccer players, with names like Maradona, Messi, Pele and Neymar Jr just the start of a long list of soccer superstars.

It’s no surprise then, that World Cup viewers are 62% more likely than the average Australian to name Mexico, Central and South America as preferred holiday destinations, with Aussies who play soccer around 65% more likely.

Three-time World Cup winner Germany is another popular spot for Aussie soccer fans compared to the general population, with World Cup watchers 70% more likely to travel there, and soccer players 117% more likely.

Following football greats like Cristián Ronaldo and Luís Figo, Spain and Portugal are also high on the list of desired travel hotspots for soccer fans. Football watchers and players are 133% more likely to holiday here than the rest of the population.

“Travel is a very subjective thing, with a traveller’s personal interests often influencing where they’d like to take a holiday,” Roy Morgan Research industry communications director Norman Morris said.

“For soccer enthusiasts, the possibilities are endless: whether it’s Barcelona to attend a match at Camp Nou, Rosario (Argentina) to worship at the Church of Maradona, or indeed Brazil for the FIFA World Cup.”
