TripAdvisor has announced the winners of the TripAdvisor TV Ad Contest, which saw hundreds of user-generated entries from the US, France and Australia compete to win the grand prize and be aired on TV.

Launched on August 1, the month-long competition engaged these TripAdvisor communities, where its ‘Don’t Just Visit’ ads initially aired, to create submissions and share their take on the current campaign, with the success spurring TripAdvisor to launch a second round of the contest.

“We have been thrilled with the success of TripAdvisor’s first-ever TV Ad Contest,” chief marketing officer Barbara Messing said.

“Our community took the challenge and delivered fun and creative ways to show that TripAdvisor is the difference-maker for having a great trip.”

The winners of the original contest are Denver-based filmmaker and TripAdvisor user Jason Graisa and his creative partner Curt Donohue for their “Fargo” submission.

Together, they will share the prize of US$25,000, with their ad airing on US national cable television for the two weeks beginning October 20.

In a surprise move, TripAdvisor also recognised the five runner-up winners, including two Aussies, making the decision to award a prize of US$10,000, and also run their ads on TV in their local.

The Australian finalists are Adelaide student Carolyn Duchene, for her submission of a Claymation-style ad, and Sydney-based camera assistant Scott Wood.

“I’ve only been making films for the last year, and after receiving great praise using my clay and stop motion techniques in the past, I thought I’d apply it to my entry,” Duchene said.

“It is such an honour to be recognised by TripAdvisor this way and I can’t wait to see my TV commercial on air!”

Similarly, Wood was excited to see his first venture into films had such a successful outcome.

“Seeing our TripAdvisor TV commercial on air; it’s priceless and will be such a positive step for our careers,” he said.

The top five finalists in the TripAdvisor TV Ad Contest runner-up winners included:

  • Melody Beam, USA – “Little Girl”
  • Oscar Lopez, USA – “Pet Friendly”
  • Carolyn Duchene, Australia – “Don’t Just Visit Sydney, Claymation”
  • Scott Wood, Australia – “Sydney”
  • Christopher Osmont, France – “Paris et sa Viennoiserie”

The second user-generated TV Ad Contest was launched on Friday October 17, specifying a broadened set of criteria to give entrants more creative freedom, with entries open until November 13.

The winner will receive a prize of US$25,000 and a chance to see their ad air on television, with five runner-up winners announced also.
