Lonely Planet has ranked Singapore as its top destination for 2015, recognising the country’s eclectic mix of heritage buildings, shopping, green spaces and other tourism highlights.

Delighted with the fact Singapore is the first Southeast Asian country to be given this accolade, Singapore Tourism Board area director Oceania, Sharon Lam said they were “humbled” by the result.

“We’re honoured by the recognition of Singapore’s efforts not just in tourism, but also in heritage, culture, greenery, dining, arts and shopping to name just a few,” Lam added.

As Aussies seek to experience a destination just like a local, Singapore’s many precincts allow visitors to immerse in cultural diversity and experience the best the city has to offer.

“This serves as motivation for us to continue delivering innovative tourism concepts that can help Aussie’s discover the real Singapore,” Lam said.

The Lonely Planet list was compiled after intensive discussions among Lonely Planet writers, staff and members of the Lonely Planet online community.

Lonely Planet Asia Pacific sales and marketing director Chris Zeiher said Singapore was deserving of the number one spot as it is “full of surprises” and is a destination set to “delight visitors next year.”
