An increasing number of travellers, both young and old, are recognising the benefits of staying in affordable accommodation such as hostels, according to recent data from HotelsCombined.

Hostels are often located in convenient locations, and are a popular alternative for travellers who are looking to save some cash.

Global PR and content manager at HotelsCombined Alycia Simons says that hostels are no longer just cheap accommodation for backpackers.

“From families looking for an affordable place to stay, to keen solo-travellers hoping to meet like-minded people along the way; hostel accommodation can be the perfect solution,” Simons said.

“While not extravagant in their offerings, they generally offer the basics – a clean and safe place to stay, with a bathroom and access to a communal kitchen,” Simons said.

HotelsCombined has searched its database of over 800,000 properties, and has listed the 10 most popular hostels in the world over the past 18 months. The hostels include:

  1. Generator Hostel London, England
  2. Meininger Hotel London Hyde Park, England
  3. Generator Hostel Dublin, Ireland
  4. Anker Hostel Oslo, Norway
  5. Nihao Taipei, Taiwan
  6. 40 Berkeley Boston, USA
  7. Centre Esplai Hostel, Spain
  8. Eurohostel Helsinki, Finland
  9. Eurohostel Glasgow, Scotland
  10. Camping Village Roma, Italy

And while hostel accommodation might not be for everyone, according to HotelsCombined data, there are travellers from certain countries who appreciate a hostel room more.

The UK, Australia and Russia are the top three countries whose residents are more likely to book a hostel, according to the data.

The top ten list of hostel supporters also included Germany, Taiwan, Spain, France, South Korea, Italy and USA.

Meininger Hotel Hyde Park’s manager Maria Holfbert said that a range of accommodation offered by hostels means visitors include everyone from university groups and families, to couples and older travellers.

“It's not only a question of the age of people but also of their mindset and preferences. We have mostly young guests but see an increasing number of older travellers staying with us,” Holfbert said.

“If people like the relaxed atmosphere and love to meet other people they are at the right address,” Holfbert said.
