The Hobbit-inspired livery will be revealed on Saturday at a special events for more than 100 VIPs and special guests.

General manager marketing and communications Mike Tod said the imagery would cover the length of the 73-metre B777 which is the longest aircraft in the airline's fleet.

"It will take six days and nearly 400 man-hours to install and at 830 square metres, it's the largest ever graphic to be applied to an aircraft," he said.

After its big reveal, the aircraft will take off to London via Los Angeles, returning in time for the global premiere of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in Wellington on November 28.
