A celebration of the launch of a new Perth-Christchurch service by Air New Zealand has seen New Zealand tourism representatives give 140 West Australian agents a taste of the destination’s South Island.

The service could become permanent if it proves popular.

To help ensure its success, Christchurch International Airport Ltd (CIAL) staged the agent event in Perth in conjunction with Air New Zealand, Virgin Australia, Tourism New Zealand and Perth Airport.

Agents learned more about the South Island’s best products and experiences and met with 16 South Island tourism industry representatives, including Christchurch & Canterbury Tourism (CCT).

CCT chief executive Tim Hunter said the turnout suggested a high level of interest in the new service.

“The new direct service dramatically shortens the time it takes to travel from Perth to Christchurch so it’s going to make holidaying here a more attractive proposition for a lot of Australians,” he said.

“We really wanted to make sure that Western Australian travel agents were well versed in what we have to offer as a destination which is why we organised this week’s event. And the response we had was very encouraging.”
