Wristband plan for tourists in Thailand

Thailand will introduce a pilot program giving "safety wristbands" to tourists at designated areas, officials say.

The wristbands will have the names of the tourists and the hotel where they are staying, so inebriated visitors may be "guided" back.

"The idea was first proposed by tourist police," a spokesman for the Ministry of Tourism and Sports said.

"It was in response to the murders that happened on Koh Tao."

Two British tourists were murdered on the popular resort island earlier this month. The victims, a man and a woman, were found with extensive head and neck injuries.

Investigations are ongoing as police try to track down a suspect captured on closed-circuit camera footage.

The official said the plan would be first implemented on Koh Tao within a month, and if successful would be mirrored at other popular tourist locales.
