Qantas reassures Iraq safe route

Qantas reassures Iraq safe route
By admin

Despite their network partner Emirates steering clear of the conflict zone, Qantas has reassured passengers it's still safe to fly over Iraq, and has no plans to re-route.

The airline released a statement saying they regularly review their flight paths and make adjustments where necessary.

"There is no suggestion that flying over Iraq is unsafe for commercial airlines, particularly given the cruising altitude that most, including Qantas, maintain,” the statement read.

Qantas reassured they will continue to monitor the situation, keeping safety a top priority. The flag carrier said its average flight level over this space is around 38,000 feet to 41,000 feet.

Emirates chief executive Tim Clark told London's The Times that the recent MH17 tragedy, "changed everything", leading to Emirates decision to stop flying over Iraq amid fears of missile threats to passenger planes from terrorists.

Clark added that now is the time to "take the bull by the horns," and stop saying “well, it's a political thing'.

Qantas will be represented by the airline peak body IATA in Montreal this Tuesday at the International Civil Aviation Organisation talks.
