LAN Airlines, member of LATAM Airlines Group, will operate its daily flight schedule between Sydney and Santiago, Chile on board the airline’s new LAN Boeing 787 fleet, commencing on April 18 2015.

LAN Airlines will be among the first to operate the Boeing 787 in the Australian and New Zealand region, signalling a step forward in strengthening its position as leading operators connecting travellers to South America.

“This announcement marks a milestone moment for LAN Airlines in the Asia Pacific region, as well as the next step in our continued effort and commitment to develop our offering and services in this market,” LATAM Airlines Group’s managing director Asia Pacific Patricio Aylwin said.

“Our fleet is now one of the most modern fleets in the industry, ensuring we continue to provide the most innovative solutions and experiences for our passengers, as well as the most environmentally friendly equipment.”

LAN Airlines’ Boeing 787 will carry a total of 247 passengers, with a two-class layout, featuring 30 Business Class seats and 217 Economy seats.

The aircraft also features new technologies and an advanced aircraft design to increase efficiency, ease of operation and on board passenger experience.

From an environmental perspective, the 787 also offers benefits such as up to 20% less CO2 emission compared to other aircraft, up to 40% less noise footprint, and 50% of the structure being made of carbon fibre composite material, making it more resistant to fatigue and corrosion, and producing less non-recyclable waste in the manufacturing process.

Enhanced passenger experience can also be put down to new features including electronic auto-dimming windows and dynamic lighting, 30% more storage space in overhead luggage storage, a design that reduces the impact of turbulence and new air humidification techniques to reduce fatigue and dryness associated with long trips.

LAN Airlines operates seven one-stop flights each week from Sydney, via Auckland to Santiago, Chile. Onward connections to over 115 destinations in South America are operated by both LAN Airlines and TAM Airlines.
