Qantas has confirmed it will invest more than $100 million in infrastructure to support its new Boeing 787 aircraft with delivery of Jetstar's first Dreamliner now expected in late September.

Executives from Qantas, Jetstar and Boeing today inspected wing components produced by Boeing Aerostructures Australia for the B787-8 in Melbourne prior to their shipment to the US where they will be fitted as final assembly of the aircraft gets underway.

Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce revealed the group will invest in training facilities for pilots and cabin crew, equipment to maintain the aircraft and jobs as it introduces the long-awaited aircraft.

"The Qantas Group fleet is now the youngest it has been in 20 years and the addition of these ultra fuel efficient 787s will help us deliver an even better standard of travel," he said.

"What Boeing has achieved with the design of this aircraft, in terms of comfort and economics, is absolutely game-changing for both passengers and airlines. There is no doubt that it will be worth the wait."

Jetstar Group chief executive Jayne Hrdlicka said the delivery of Jetstar's first 787 in September will be followed by a further two Dreamliners by the end of the year. They will be deployed to destinations like Honolulu, Phuket and Tokyo currently served by Airbus A330 aircraft..

"Jetstar will be the first airline in Australia and New Zealand, and the first low cost carrier in Asia Pacific, to operate the Boeing 787," she said.

"Melbourne is the home of Jetstar, and the 787 will be a very important part of our future, so there's a great symmetry that parts of these aircraft are made locally."
